Background

Daily commuters on Ganeshkhind Road may soon get relief as Pune’s much-awaited infrastructure projects move closer to completion. Officials said the integrated double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk is nearly ready, while Metro Line-3 between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar has cleared crucial safety checks.

The flyover project, one of the most complex traffic upgrades in the city, now stands about 90% complete. It combines a road flyover on the lower level and a metro corridor above it. The design aims to reduce heavy congestion on the Aundh–Shivajinagar stretch, which witnesses long traffic queues during peak hours.

Officials confirmed that a part of the flyover had opened earlier and has already improved vehicle movement. The remaining ramps and connecting arms will open in phases by late January and February. Once all sections become operational, the structure will cut signal waiting time and improve east–west connectivity in the busy university zone.

Meanwhile, Pune Metro Line-3 has reached a key milestone after successfully passing safety inspections by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). With this approval, the authorities will soon begin trial runs on the route.

At present, 14 metro trainsets have arrived, while the total fleet will include 22 trains. Construction work at most stations is in the final stage.

Officials have set March 31 as the target date to begin passenger services on the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor. This metro line will provide a faster and more reliable option for IT professionals and office workers who currently depend on road transport.

Together, the phased opening of the University Chowk flyover and the launch of Metro Line-3 are expected to bring a major shift in Pune’s traffic movement, easing pressure on some of the city’s busiest roads.
