Background:

Pune’s public transport will get a big boost as PMPML plans to add about 2,500 buses by April-May 2026. The goal is to make travel easier, reduce waiting times, and cover more areas in the city and nearby regions.

At present, PMPML runs about 394 routes in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Before the new buses arrive, officials are reviewing current operations, looking at route performance, passenger demand, and gaps in service.

The plan will also cover suburban areas, helping long-distance commuters. Waiting times, now around 20 minutes, could drop to 8-10 minutes on busy routes.

Officials say more frequent buses will make public transport easier and encourage people to use buses instead of private vehicles. After the new buses arrive, PMPML’s fleet will reach nearly 4,000 buses, serving around 18 lakh passengers daily. Daily revenue is also expected to rise to nearly Rs 4 crore.

Routes with high passenger demand are likely to get more trips, and new route proposals are also being considered as part of the fleet expansion. PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Deore said that the new buses will help speed up route changes and service improvements.

Commuters are happy, hoping the changes will improve public transport in Pune.
