Background:
Pune’s Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 is expected to start by March 2026. The 23.3 km elevated line will connect the city to Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, making travel easier for IT workers and reducing traffic.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the work on Line 3 is on track and asked Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd (PITCMRL) to start operations by March 31, without any further delays. While some stations may open later due to pending construction, the launch is expected to significantly improve metro footfall and connectivity across Pune.
The metro service, which began three years ago, has so far operated only on Line 1 (Swargate to PCMC) and Line 2 (Vanaz to Ramwadi). Both routes are set for extension, while Line 4 (Khadakwasla to Kharadi) has received approval from the Union Government.
Work on the PCMC to Nigdi part of Line 1 is moving ahead, and extensions on Line 2 from Ramwadi to Wagholi and Vanaz to Chandni Chowk are expected to start soon.
New metro routes are being planned, including Wakad to Katraj, Wakad to Chakan, Kharadi to Pune Airport, Shivajinagar to Kondhwa, Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor, and Hadapsar to Saswad Road. These projects will make public transport better, reduce traffic, and support Pune’s growing business and IT areas.
