Background

The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved two new metro corridors under the Pune Metro Phase-2 project, with an estimated cost of ₹5,704 crore. The new routes will connect Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor and Hadapsar Bus Depot to Saswad Road, expanding the city’s metro network towards the eastern and rural areas.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who is also the Guardian Minister of the Pune district, confirmed the decision and stated that he had been actively following up on the proposal.

The two fully elevated corridors will cover 16 km and include 14 stations. They will be implemented by Maha Metro and are expected to ease traffic congestion in Pune, especially in fast-developing suburbs like Hadapsar, Fursungi, Loni Kalbhor, and Saswad.

Officials stated that the project will reduce travel time and help cut down vehicular pollution by promoting public transport use.

Chief Minister Fadnavis has also instructed the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and its concessionaire to speed up construction on the 23 km Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, which is due for completion by March 2026.

So far, 10 of the 23 planned stations have been completed, and work on the remaining 13 stations is expected to accelerate following the latest Cabinet directive.
